Strap-ons : The Basics

So how to choose the perfect strap-on? But first … what is a strap-on? It is a sex toy you attach to yourself to engage in (potentially) sexual activities : penetrate another person, masturbate, alleviate gender dysphoria, etc. There is many kinds of strap-ons and I will try to simplify it as much as I can here.

There is two part in a strap-on, the harness and the dildo. You can buy them separately or together. When you choose a harness be sure that the straps go around the thighs instead of between the butt cheeks, just like a rock climbing harness would! This way, you will have more stability and control. Harnesses are usually made out of leather, fake leather, neoprene or fabric (the same fabric as backpack straps). On your harness there will be a ring that will hold your dildo in place. The ring can be made of metal, rubber or silicone. If snaps hold the ring in place, it means that you will be able to change the ring to put a smaller or bigger dildo. Some harness do not have interchangeable rings, which usually means that they are cheaper but it’s not always the case ! Underwear harnesses will not have interchangeable rings and they are usually not cheap at all! For exemple the awesome underwear harnesses from RodeoH or Spareparts. Underwear harnesses can be less stable, but they can be really awesome to alleviate gender dysphoria!

To choose the perfect dildo to go with your harness, I would recommend to go check my posts on sex toys material !

Strap-on kits are usually cheaper and can be great to try out. The kits come with both the harness and the dildo! They will usually be cheaply made but it’s not always the case. Tantus makes good strap-on kits with high quality dildos and a good first harness.

The last kind of strap-ons I will talk about are strapless strap-on. They are strap-ons where a part of the toy holds inside you and the second part hangs outside. (The big purple toy in the picture) They can be hard to hold in if you do not have super strong pelvic muscles! I usually recommend to cut a hole in a pair of underwear to stabilize it. If you have a harness with a hole that goes all the way through, you can also use it with a strap-less strap-on.

When talking about “strap-ons” for trans masculine folks, a different vocabulary is used. I will be explaining this vocabulary in a future article!

I hope this helps, if not don’t worry it will get clearer and clearer with the other articles ! Again don’t be shy to DM me for specific questions.
